Dear Fellow RCPJ Rotarians,

This is the second time I’m writing to you in this column. Before I get into writing on current affairs of our country or great philosophies, let me try to touch on mundane things like what we should all do to make the work of all our office bearers bearable. After all they are only volunteers and doing us a favour in whatever they do and not paid to do a job. By freeing them from tedious and unnecessary hassle like informing and reminding members of their weekly duties at our weekly meetings, they will feel they are doing a worthwhile job and have more time to think and implement better ideas and procedures for the enjoyment of all members. Hence, we will have more takers for the various areas of service and members will benefit more from a competent and innovative club.

We say let every Rotarian be a model for Interactors. I hope the Interactors do not take this to mean all Rotarians. Some Rotarians don’t even inform whether they are coming for a event or meeting that involves them. Now, what kind of a model is that? It will make the work of the organiser or host so much easier if every member informs in good time compared to the host calling every member concerned. If to respond is good etiquette, shouldn’t Rotarians being captains of industry set a good example for others to follow?

As regards, the Bulletin, I am beginning to see members sending materials and info directly to the Webmaster, Clare.  Prez Yeng Kit and Rianne have started the ball rolling. Thank you. I hope the other Activity Heads will do likewise with immediate effect. This will speed up the publication of the Bulletin and your activity get the publicly it deserves. Whatever photos you take at any event or meeting of the Club are most welcomed for the Bulletin. Please insert captions for your photos before sending to Clare at Clear Joy.

Thank you for co-operation.

 THE 4-WAY TEST

Of all the things we think, say or do:

1.  Is it the Truth?

2.  Is it Fair to all concerned?

3.  Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships?

4.  Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

One of the most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics in the world is the Rotary 4-Way Test.  It was created by Rotarian Hubert J. Taylor in 1932 when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy.  Taylor looked for a way to save the struggling company mired in depression-caused financial difficulties.  He drew up a 24-word code of ethics for all employees to follow in their business and professional lives.  The 4-Way Test became the guide for sales, production, advertising and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company was credited to this simple philosophy.

Herb Taylor became President of Rotary International in 1954-55.  The 4-Way Test was adopted by Rotary in 1943 and had been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousand ways.
