PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

My dear Friends,

IT IS GOOD TO BE BACK!

As the saying goes, the show must go on.  And not only did it go on in the Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya, but it was executed with finesse by a bunch of dedicated and well-meaning Rotarians. Syabas to all and “RIBUAN TERIMA KASIH” for the support to the continuing success of our Club.

I shall delve on my overseas experiences for the past one month on another occasion. Suffice to mention here, my family and I decided to take the “less traveled road in Europe”; and that was indeed an eye-opener for all of us on many occasions.

I was fortunate to be able to attend the first Interact Installation Meeting for this year at Assunta Secondary School before I embarked on my journey and now that I have returned, I shall be able to attend the last Interact Installation Meeting for this year scheduled this Saturday 18th August 2007, and that is for Catholic High School Interact Club.

All the other Interact Clubs have successfully completed their respective Installations, including the Interact Leadership Training Seminar. What a fine investment for tomorrow carried out by Rotarians who care for the future. A big thank you for all who made it happen and who will keep on making it happen as you are the people who do not expect any other rewards except to know and hopefully witness that you have put them on the right path and direction.

Education is a multi-faceted object. Text book knowledge is just one facet of it. Good schooling in the sense of examination results depends on good education, and that means:

Learning to value yourself so that one can accept constructive criticisms
Learning to share the values of your school community
Learning to assert yourself without being aggressive

Our whole ethos is the development of people equipped to survive; people with a sense of responsibility.

It is imperative to form character in School and that is achieved by inculcating values such as:

BEING HONEST
SHOWING KINDNESS AND COMPASSION
BEING FAITHFUL
AVOIDING GREED

I firmly believe that once we enhance our MORAL FACULTIES, the other characteristics will follow suit. Thus, YOUTH INVESTMENT is GOOD INVESTMENT and when properly administered, GUARANTEES RICH DIVIDENDS.

Therefore, in line with our theme ROTARY SHARES, let us share our TIME AND EXPERIENCE AND WISDOM and we shall certainly strike the correct note in our aspiration towards SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

The Interact Leadership Training Seminar was successfully conducted on Saturday, 4th August 2007 at the Catholic High School. The aim of the seminar, held every year, is to prepare the Presidents and Directors of the Interact Clubs to carry out their responsibilities efficiently. Six clubs participated in the seminar. The Directors were grouped according to their portfolios. They were briefed on their duties by the experienced Rotarians. They were keen to learn and many questions were directed at the Rotarians. The RCPJ is much indebted to CHS for allowing the use of the auditorium. The following Rotarians were present to deliver their lectures to the Directors: PP Ong See Seng, PP Michael Toh, PP Liew Shou Kong, PP Rupert Goldman, New Generations Director, Kevin Yong, Rtn Ghazali Kho, Rtn Pua Boon Yee, Rtn Koh Kia Heong, Rtn Tony Ong and Rtn Dr Eric Wong. Rtn Pua organized the Seminar.

When Tom and Grace first got married, Tom said," I am putting a box under the bed. You must promise to never look in it."

In all their 30 years of marriage, Grace never looked. However, on the afternoon of their 30th anniversary, curiosity got the best of her. She lifted the lid and peeked inside. In the box were three empty beer cans and $1,874.25 in cash. She closed the box and put it back under the bed. Now that she knew what was in the box, she was doubly curious as to why.

That evening they went out for a special dinner. After dinner Grace could no longer contain her curiosity and she confessed: "I am so sorry. For all these years I kept my promise and never looked into the box under our bed; however, today the temptation was too much and I gave in. But now I need to know: Why do you keep the cans in the box?

Tom thought for a while and said, "I guess after all these years you deserve to know the truth. Whenever I was unfaithful to you, I put an empty beer can in the box under the bed to remind myself not to do it again."

Grace was shocked, but said, "I am very disappointed and saddened, but I guess after all those years away from home on the road, temptation does happen, and I guess that three times is not that bad considering the years."

They hugged and made their peace.

A little while later, Grace asked Tom, "So why do you have all that money in the box?"

Tom answered, "Well, whenever the box was filled up with empty cans, I took them to the recycling centre and redeemed them for cash."
