As I write this message, Malaysia will be celebrating 50 years of nationhood in 2 days.
I always used to think our own Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya is a microcosm of Malaysia.
Our membership composition and activities are a classic example of ‘unity in diversity’.
All our thoughts and actions are foremost for the betterment of our Club as a whole; and in that process for the eventual betterment of our fraternity and organization.
There is little room to self-grandiose.
As I fondly reflect and reminisce on this auspicious occasion for our country, the writings of William Preston in 1804 come to mind:
“Then while the toast goes round,
Then mirth and glee about,
Let’s be happy to a man;
We’ll laugh a little; we’ll drink a little,
We’ll work a little, and play a little”.
How apt and unique that this still holds true, where amity,
camaraderie and friendship are abundantly abound. Sometimes, the feeling of ‘I belong to the minority’ rears an ugly head.
However, I consider a blessing being in the minority, as ‘a
minority’ is always compelled to think.
How appropriate the statement rings: “Goodness is the only investment that never fails to return a
dividend.”
I believe that these are the very values and elements that have not only preserved but also led to the growth, development and proliferation of our movement and organization.
Let us count on our blessings and espouse our principles as ROTARY SHARES.
