PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Very often, what is closest and dearest to us, is often overlooked or taken for granted. In that process, the true worth of those elements is not realized. Only when we are ‘awakened’ to their true potentialities, do we then realize what we have missed.

As I write these few lines, they remind me of an anecdote where the influenced and uninfluenced & innocent minds were put to test.

A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present “Seven Wonders of the World”. Though there were some disagreements, the following receive the most votes:

1.Egypt’s Great Pyramids
2.Taj Mahal
3.Grand Canyon
4.Panama Canal
5.Empire State Building
6.St.Peter’s Basilica
7.China’s Great Wall

Whilst gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list.

The girl replied, “Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.

The teacher replied, “Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help.”

The girl hesitated then read, “I think the Seven Wonders of the World are:
1. To See
2. To Hear
3. To Touch
4. To Taste
5. To Feel
6. To Laugh
7. To Love ."

And these 7 Wonders, the most precious things in life – which cannot be built by hand or bought by man – are the very elements that we must promote and experience whenever in the company of each other.

EDITORIAL

The Phonetics and Phonology course is an extension to the CLE. After the CLE course held at KGNS from 23rd to 24th June, the RCPJ was approached to conduct a course in phonetics and phonology. It’s now confirmed that this course will be held on two consecutive Saturdays: 20th October and 27th October from 9.00 .a.m. to 4.00 p.m. And the venue is SRJK (C) Chen Moh, Old Town, Petaling Jaya.

The purpose of this course is to teach the English teachers how to recognize and utter the sounds of the English language via its phonetic symbols. For example, the English word ‘cat’ is made up of three sounds: /k + æ + t/. The workshop will also look into syllable stress and intonation patterns. The teachers at the primary level have to teach pronunciation. They are very often unable to pronounce the words accurately because they are unable to read the phonetic symbols.

This is another community service project that the RCPJ is committed to in the suburb of PJ.

DON'T MESS WITH KIDS!!

The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture.
"Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown up and say, 'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.'
A small voice at the back of the room rang out, "And there's the teacher, she's dead."

A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, "Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face."
"Yes," the class said.
"Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?"
A little fellow shouted, "Cause your feet ain't empty."

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is watching."
Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies.
A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples.
