PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

At the last Board Meeting, I expressed much concern that our projects are not moving as fast as they should be. There’re hiccups along the way. We need to meet with these challenges head-on. We can’t delay any longer. Any delay means that our enthusiasm is stifled and this affects our community. We’ve raised funds and these funds are meant to be spent wisely for our beneficiaries. We need to deliver. That is the commitment to our friends and well-wishers who have always supported us in our charity projects. We owe them the trust that they have bestowed upon us as the custodian of the funds.

The Water & Sanitation Project, started quite rapidly, seems to have slowed down because of communication. What we require from the contractor does not seem to be forthcoming. We need a quote from the construction of a tank and the pipes. We’re also delayed in the purchase of the pump, purportedly to be supplied by the government. However, at the last Board Meeting, the members decided that our Club purchase the pump and also explore the idea of a solar-powered energy for a longer-term plan in terms of electricity supply. We’re planning another trip to Sungkai in mid-November to firm up a lot of matters. It is the dream of our Club to use this model or replica for other Orang Asli Settlements.

The Redeeming Human Dignity Project has been delayed because of staff problems at the restaurant. This will be resolved soon and the training of the seven selected candidates will resume in mid-November. The Rea-da-book Project requires alternative locations. We’re unable to source suitable business locations. There’s a suggestion that Interact Clubs could assist in this project. The Disabled Band Project is on track. The musical equipment has been bought and delivered. The training has commenced. Perhaps Rotarians and Anns could visit the Beautiful Gate in Kepong to give our musically-inclined disabled some encouragement.

Traditionally, our Club had always organized a project called ‘Dignifying a Profession’ under the former Avenue of Service – the Vocational Service. We’ll not depart from this tradition. We’re going to organize this project but the Board made a decision to honour our teachers from the six schools where we have the Interact Clubs. This project will be implemented in November.

Rotarians, the year is fast coming to an end. Let us put our efforts together to see that what we’ve planned for the Rotary Year 09/10 will materialize to make dreams real for our community. We should not be seen as talking only but to get down to brass tacks to doing work. I really need your help. Thank you.

EDITORIAL
by PDG Dato Dr Low Teong
We have now completed four months of the Rotary year under the leadership of President Dr Eric Wong. The process of electing the new Board of Directors has started with the Board of Directors Meeting on Wednesday 28 October 2009 making the decision to elect a Nominating Committee.

In my previous Editorial I had congratulated President Dr Eric Wong and the club members for the excellent progress we made in the first two months. But things appear to be slowing down, especially in our Service Projects. President Dr Eric Wong himself expressed concern about the slow progress in the implementation of the Service Projects. The month of November is just two days away. At the start of the year we had set a target to complete all our projects, except the Golden Child Project and some New Generation Projects, by end of February to enable us to submit the projects for district awards. That leaves us with four months left. We have not had much progress in the first four months. So we really need to double up our efforts in the next four months if we are to reach our target.

We missed the boat for the submission of our Matching Grant for the GOSM Home again this year. Even though our application was submitted on 8th August 2009 our application was not accepted due to lack of funds by The Rotary Foundation. In fact no clubs in our district were successful in their application. Our sister club RC Chungli was successful because they submitted their application on 1st July 2009. I was targeting to submit our application by 1st July 2009 but was unable to do so due to delay in receiving the documents from RC Colchester. We can however proceed with the grant with no match from TRF. The grant will then be for USD14500.00 or about RM50,000. Alternatively we can wait for 1st July next year and resubmit our application. The Board has decided to proceed without the match. We still need the agreement of our district and the two international sponsors.

At the Pre-President Elect Training Seminar 1 (or PrePETS 1) in A’Formosa over the weekend, the President Elects, including PE Leong Yeng Kit were told very specifically that they would need to reorganize their private life so as to create time to serve effectively in their position. They were told that they need to reduce their involvement in other NGOs, Societies and Clubs so that there will be no conflict in the time and dedication they need to serve their Rotary leadership position. I think the same must be also true for the rest of the members of the Board of Directors.

Serving on the Board of Directors of the club is purely voluntary. There will always be members of the club who are prepared to serve and HAVE THE TIME. This statement, of course, has one exception in the past. The district trainers have now been instructed to refrain from using the term Recycled Presidents or Recycled Directors. What’s wrong with a Past President serving in the Board? After all Past RI Directors Bittchai Ratakul served his club as Club Service Director the year after he finished his Presidency of Rotary International. We are all ROTARIANS after we complete our year of service as Presidents or District Governors. So I hope the Nominating Committee will nominate club members who are not only prepared to serve but more importantly have the time and are prepared to devote themselves to the job.

THE WEEK WE SHARED

AG Farouk Nurish addressed the club on Public Relations. Public relations can be defined as developing a strong message and finding the most appropriate way to deliver it. Rotary needs public relations to create awareness of Rotary’s effort, build a lasting image of Rotary, develop trust that leads to acceptance and eventual support and attract potential members.

Rotary International, the Rotary District, the Rotary Clubs and every individual Rotarian are responsible for publicising Rotary. This can be done by advertising, word of mouth and the mass media.

The message should be directed to the media, local government officials, the business community, civic leaders and organisation, the local communities we serve and the people directly affected by Rotary service projects.

Rotary quote of the day presented by Rtn Ryan Ho:

“I joined Rotary for the same reasons most other Rotarians do. None of us joined our organisation to change the world. Many of us knew little of Rotary programs. Most of us were seeking an opportunity to extend fellowship and make new acquaintances. The full impact of Rotary came to us slowly. We gradually became involved in the spirit of Rotary”
Edward F Cadman, President, Rotary International 1985-86

CLUB, DISTRICT & ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NEWS
History of The 4-Way Test

The 4-Way Test was conceived by Herbert J. Taylor, a Chicago Rotarian and president of Rotary International in 1954-55.

He applied The 4-Way Test to the operation of his company with remarkable results and subsequently shared it with others. The story is told best by Herbert J. Taylor in this description of how the Test came into existence and what effect it had.

“Back in 1932 I was assigned, by the creditors of the Club Aluminium Products Company, the task of saving the company from being closed out as a bankrupt organization.

“The company was a distributor of cookware and other household items. We found that the company owed its creditors more than $400,000 in excess of its total assets. It was bankrupt but still alive.

“At that time we borrowed $6,100 from a Chicago bank to give us a little cash on which to operate.

“While we had a good product our competitors also had fine cookware with well-advertised brand names. Our company had some fine people working for it, but our competitors also had the same. Our competitors were naturally in much stronger financial condition than we were.

“With tremendous obstacles and handicaps facing us, we felt that we must develop something in our organization which our competitors would not have in equal amount. We decided that it should be the character, dependability, and service mindedness of our personnel. “We determined, first, to be very careful in the selection of our personnel and, second, to help them become better men and women as they progressed with our company. “We believed that ‘In right there is might,’ and we determined to do our best to always be right.

“Our industry, as was true of scores of other industries, had a code of ethics — but the code was long, almost impossible to memorize and therefore impractical. We felt that we needed a simple measuring stick of ethics which everyone in the company could quickly memorize. We also believed that the proposed test should not tell our people what they must do, but ask them questions which would make it possible for them to find out whether their proposed plans, policies, statements, or actions were right or wrong.

“We had looked in available literature for such a short measuring stick of ethics but could not find a satisfactory one. One day in July 1932, I decided to pray about the matter. That morning I leaned over my desk and asked God to give us a simple guide to help us think, speak and do that which was right. I immediately picked up a white card and wrote out The 4-Way Test of the things we think, say, or do as follows:

“1. Is it the Truth?
“2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
“3. Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
“4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
