PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Continued from previous week's bulletin

Thus, if one were to ask me now, “What do you think of Rotary?”, I shall have to resort to how George Bernard Shaw answered, when he got married and was posed the question:

“What do you think of marriage?”

It’s difficult to answer,” he replied.
“I might say it’s like Freemasonry. Those who are received into the order cannot talk about it. And those who are members are pledged to eternal silence.”

Be so it may be, I do realize that:

bulletIf it is to be, it is up to me.

And so, as I continue to proceed on this momentous journey, this time as the President of the Club, I suppose I should take comfort in what Thomas Edison said in his Quest of Discovery:

“I did not fail 9,999 times
I successfully found out what did not work 9,999 times.”

ROTARY SHARES.

EDITORIAL
by Eric Wong

University education is all about the training of the mind. It trains a student how to be critical, analytical, logical and methodical. New frontiers of knowledge provide the catalyst to do so. But knowledge is never static. It changes over time. With a trained mind, it can accommodate any form of changes. The mind is supreme.

Research-led education is a process in learning. The processes are significant as the learner is initiated into learning process by process. Along the way, when a difficulty arises, the teacher constructs scaffolds or platforms that enable the learner to analyze the problem and think for himself what the next stage encompasses. These processes enhance the skills in reasoning, analyzing and rationalizing. Today the processes are valid in terms of learning because they reflect how the learner thinks and formulates his strategies to arrive at the product. Learning is now no more product-centered. A case in point is geometry in mathematics. The learner has to outline the necessary steps that are of significance instead of the immediate answer to the question.

In the university, students are introduced to the current researches of their subjects. The students study how the researchers finally determine the outcome of their research. They then apply their own research keeping in mind the processes in it.

It sounds tedious. But education has to take into account new ideas in teaching and learning so that university education can become more motivating and challenging.

Corporate Lesson 4

A turkey was chatting with a bull.

"I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got the energy."

"Well, why don't you nibble on my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients."

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.

Finally after a fourth night, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree.

Soon he was spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

Moral of the story:

Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.
