PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The Joint District Conference for Districts 3300 and 3310 was successfully completed on 28th October 2007 at Sheraton Subang Hotel & Towers, Subang Jaya, Selangor.

Continued from previous week's bulletin

The Opening Ceremony commenced with the Presentation of the Flags.

The six Plenary Sessions were both, interesting and informative.

The Spouses Programme was well received.

The District Governor’s Banquet was spectacular in its pomp and pageantry and the show time by our RC Bangsar Rotarian DJ Dave and his retinue was of International standard.

The ‘liquid and solid’ interactions in the “House of Friendship” were infectious and went on till the wee hours of the morning.

Thus being the climate, there were many heavy hearts during the Closing Ceremony and when ‘we parted to meet again’.

However on a personal note and as a member of the Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya, it was a delight to see my good friend, PDG Dato Dr. Low Teong walk on to the stage to deservedly receive the much coveted RI Award “Service Above Self”’. That was the ‘icing on my cake’.

Witnessing this event was nostalgic, as I reflected on the RI Convention in Glasgow, Scotland, whence a large delegation from our Club traveled overseas to witness our late Tan Sri James Peter Chin being inducted as RI Director.

RCPJ should have greater numbers and better representation at Conferences, especially, when they are held within our shores.

ROTARY SHARES.

EDITORIAL
by Eric Wong
Who is Don Bradman? When was Australia founded? In which state is Ayers Rock? These could be a few of the questions for new migrants to Australia. This may sound ridiculous but underlying this cultural test, there is a good reason.

Migrants must be loyal and also display loyalty to their host country. This is a must. When one chooses to settle down in a foreign country, one cannot still maintain their identity absolutely to the extent of completely ignoring the culture of that host country.

In the first place, why migrate if one is not prepared to be a little of the Aussie. There’s nothing wrong. It’s an understanding and the appreciation of the culture of Australia. We are not saying that you’ve to be a true blue dinkie die!

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NEWS
Strategic cooperative relationships will enhance service efforts

By Janis Young
Rotary International News

A key feature of The Rotary Foundation's Future Vision Plan involves forming strategic cooperative relationships (SCR) with organizations that can help the Foundation accomplish its mission and the goals of each area of focus. Under the SCR model adopted by the Foundation Trustees and RI Board, the Foundation will strategically cooperate with organizations that specialize in one of strategic areas of focus to be selected at the April Trustees meeting and endorsed at the June Board meeting.

Areas of focus are defined as a priority world need, identified by Rotarians, in which the Foundation is directing its resources to have a sustainable and measurable impact that leverages the organization's financial and volunteer resources. The SCR organizations are expected to provide financial support, technical expertise, or advocacy efforts in projects and activities that are designed jointly with the Foundation and include Rotarian participation.

The Trustees anticipate significant benefits in cooperating with other organizations to support the projects and activities of the Foundation. The relationship is expected to promote a holistic approach in providing sustainable outcomes in projects and activities of Rotarians worldwide. The SCR model provides unlimited opportunities to spread the message of Rotarians' service focus.

The SCR model will focus on a collaborative approach in projects with financial, technical, and advocacy resources involving Rotarians, clubs, districts, and other Rotary entities. The final outcomes provide a significant benefit to the communities that both organizations - Rotary and the strategic cooperative relationship organization - are serving.

"Like our partnership in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, strategic cooperative relationships will enable The Rotary Foundation to address larger needs," said Trustee Chair Robert S. Scott. "We expect to partner with organizations that are recognized worldwide for their work in our areas of focus and who can contribute
financial, technical, or advocacy resources."

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase......... "goodnight, sleep tight."

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their
calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts... So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them "Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down." It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's"

Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.

At least 75% of people who read this will try to lick their elbow!

Don't delete this just because it looks weird. Believe it or not, you can read it.......
