PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It’s not always that our Club engages on a big-fund raising campaign. We had smaller ones like the charity golf organized by Rtn Sashi Dharan or the Mariah Cordello Show organized by our late PP Alfred Tsang or even the food and fund-fair organized by PDG Dato’ Dr Low Teong. These were fund-raising projects that raised between RM30,000 and RM50,000 for each one of them. Now this charity dinner show on 6th January 2009 is a big one and our hope of raising RM500,000 may not be in sight because of the unexpected economic slowdown. Many of our friends and well-wishers are cautious of their budgets and there are some who are already affected by this global meltdown. But let us not use this as a reason for not pushing the sales of the dinner tables.

From our statistics, many Rotarians are buying only one table of RM3,000. I sincerely appeal to you to push for the sales of the tables. With some effort, you could sell two or three more. Please help us. To date, we have sold 62 tables. We need to sell 20 more tables in two weeks’ time. If we could hit 80, we’ll have sufficient funds to run our projects for the next two years.

We may have differences in organizing this event. But let us sink these difference and look at the common denominator and that is getting the money to help our PJ community. Please help the Club and try not to let the Club down. We’re committed to this big project and we need to follow it through.

Please … please help the Club.

EDITORIAL
by Eric Wong
The IJN is a symbol of hope for many people. Civil servants and the poor could turn towards this heart hospital with the hope that they would not incur hefty medical bills in heart surgery. The proposed takeover by a conglomerate will signal the departure of this hope. Corporates are not interested in running an organization for little profit or for charity. It is their business to make as much money as possible with the result that medical care would escalate and go beyond the reach of many poor people.

The major illnesses of Malaysians are associated with diabetes and heart ailment. The treatment for these illnesses is a necessity. Without treatment, thousands of people will pass on. It is then the responsibility of the government to see to it that the IJN is like the supplier of electricity or water. Without it, it’s going to create hardships, particularly for the poor.

Let’s pray that the IJN will remain as it is.

THE WEEK WE SHARED

Mr Patrick Ho, the editor of Golf Digest, spoke about golf that has made people a little eccentric. People have become so obsessed with the game that they will do anything to derive pleasures from it. Patrick gave 3 situations in golf that govern enthusiasts and they are:

Where to play

How to play

What to play

Patrick with the help of his colleague Mr Robert Lee showed Rotarians the exotic spots of golf from all over the world. I must tell you need money to play in such places. Not everyone could afford it. How to play addresses the techniques of golf. Perhaps we need to ask ourselves what is it that the pros have that we don’t. And what to play is all about the clubs and irons. Golf is practice … practice … practice.

Over all it was good advice to our Rotarian golfers. Thanks Patrick and Robert.
