PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

On Tuesday 6th May 2008, the Incoming Board of RCPJ for 2008-09 presented their agenda at our First Club Assembly. From the agenda discerned and the response of members present, we should augur well for the future in the spirit it was delivered.

The reports from the Task Forces (Membership Development, Attendance and Fellowship) were also disseminated on that day. A big thank you is due to PP Tarcisius Chin, PP Ong See Seng and PP Rupert Goldman for the compilation of the reports and their efforts.

These courses of action were taken as we have to resolve certain “problems” inherent in our Club.

The word “problem” has taken on a special meaning for each member present.

It was used indiscriminately to mean:
bullet

A complex situation that requires action

bullet

Something that has gone wrong, or the cause of what has gone wrong

bullet

A difficult choice

bullet

Future trouble

These are very different concerns, and each requires a different approach to being resolved.
Yet elements of all these concerns are intertwined in our Club scenario.

Before effective action can be taken in a complex situation, we need to clarify what issues require action. Therefore an effective approach is first to sort out and assess the various parts of the situation. The Situation Appraisal process provides a logical, common sense approach to clarifying concerns and making them manageable.

Once this initial separation is made, it is easier to see that the concerns fall into three major categories:
bullet

Something has gone wrong and there is a need to find out why

bullet

A choice of action must be made

bullet

There is a need to manage future difficulties

On defining the word “problems” to mean only those concerns where something has gone wrong, communications will improve because there is no longer confusion about the meaning of “problem.”

EDITORIAL
by Eric Wong
It’s difficult to depart from a Club that you have grown to love and cherish. It’s also like a home where good old friends think well of you. This is the case of PDG Dr Ganesan Nallathamby who joined the RCPJ in 1970, thus clocking 38 years of commitment towards Rotary. In welcoming back Dr Ganesan to the RCPJ as an Honorary Member, the Club has magnanimously recognized someone who has contributed so immensely to Rotary. It is a befitting gesture and the Board of Directors led by President Balram Menon should be commended for a very justifiable and warranted decision.

In responding to the citation given by our President, Dr Ganesan still has the gusto to talk about the calamities in Myanmar and China that require our community’s attention. In an emotional appeal, he voiced the sympathy and suffering of these people. He has also concern for our Club that should fight its way back to being a premier club. Rightly said because Dr Ganesan has seen it all. He was the President of the RCPJ in 1977/78 and rose to the rank of District Governor 10 years later.

Thank you, Dr Ganesan for the light that you have shown us and we wish that you could partake in our major activities from time to time.

CLUB NEWS

Attendance Make-up events/activities

The Board at its recent meeting has declared effective immediately the following event/activities of the Club as attendance make-up events & activities namely:

  1. Super Camp (Interactors) from 24-27 May 08 at Trolak

Resulting from the above declaration attendance at the above events and activities qualifies as a make-up for absence from a weekly meeting, if it is within two weeks before or after the said weekly meeting. It is nevertheless the duty of an attendee who wishes to claim a make-up to notify the attendance chairman accordingly.

ONG SEE SENG GOLF CHALLENGE TROPHY 2007/8

The following Rotarians participated in our Club’s Annual Golf Tournament held at KGNS on 9th May 2008.

Rupert Goldman (defending champion)
Teo Woon Hud
Goh Seng Chuan
Yap Swee Fatt
J. D. John
Koh Kia Heong
Michael Toh
Sunder Singh
Tony Ong
Kevin Yong
Jack Lim
Ong See Seng
Michael Chua

I am pleased to report that the “OSS Trophy was won by none other than President Elect Kevin Yong with a massive score of 41 points. The runner-up was Yap Swee Fatt who scored 38 points. Although being embarrassed that his ‘bogus’ handicap is finally exposed, Kevin continued to celebrate his win with free flow of beer on his account.

It is very difficult to select a day when all golfers in our Club can participate but we still ended up with 13 golfers which is pretty close to the attendance at our weekly meetings.

The prize presentation to the winner and runner-up will be on the night of the Installation Dinner.

I would like to thank all those who participated for making the tournament a fun-filled event.

Tournament Convenor
PP Rupert Goldman
