LIFE HAS NO PLEASURE NOBLER THAN THAT OF FRIENDSHIP.
This is a truth which we, as we mature, discover in good time.
That is why we in Rotary meet one another, if not weekly, then as frequently as we can.
People who are getting on in years have found out what is the secret of serenity and happiness. This is something which is denied the young and the middle-aged. What is this secret? Part of it I am sure is that happiness is something you cannot chase and catch. Young people spend their life chasing it, but somehow they never quite get hold of it.
I think that I am now old enough to realize that happiness is a gift which comes quietly when one least thinks about it.
Young people strive hard, yet, too often lose sight of the things that are really worthwhile.
As we grow old, we come to realize what things have real value.
One of them is companionship. And surely, companionship is the great benefit which comes from belonging to Rotary Clubs.
Companionship transcends even likes and dislikes.
This reminds me of a silly story about a man who walked into a café and asked the waitress to bring him grape-fruit juice, half water with seeds in it; scrambled eggs, leathery and watery; toast burnt to a frazzle and a pot of luke-warm tea with the leaves floating in it.
The waitress stared at him in amazement for a moment or two, then habit reasserted itself and she asked mechanically: “Anything else, Sir?”
“Yes,” he nodded. “Just sit opposite me and nag me. You see, I’m homesick!”
May we continue to find our club and companions ever more interesting and enjoyable.
THE ROTARY CLUB OF PETALING JAYA IS A PRICELESS TONIC.
Being my penultimate message in the PeeJay Pos may be the cause for this nostalgia.
Be seeing all of you next week for my swansong.
