PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The evening of Tuesday 24th June was when I had my swansong.

It was a day when THANK YOU, THANK YOU and THANK YOU were the order of the day.

A big thank you is due to my Board Members for doing such splendid work.

A big thank you is also due to you my dear Friends for providing us an opportunity to serve you.

And a very big thank you is due to all our Partners in Service for making things happen in this Rotary Year.

The eleven 100 per centers for Club Attendance were also honoured that night in addition to all those members who went beyond their normal call of duty to serve the club.

That evening was also the day when I installed the 48th President of the Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya, Kevin Yong who then invested his officers for the Rotary Year 2008-2009.

Such is the uniqueness of Rotary that as one set of officers fade away, another set of officers is heralded to serve and ensure the continuum of the movement in general and the club in particular.

We can look forward to another year of “SERVICE ABOVE SELF”.

We can take great pride in being members of this club to EFFECTIVELY AND EFFICIENTLY execute our RI themes from ROTARY SHARES to MAKE DREAMS REAL.

EDITORIAL
by Eric Wong
The CLE Project has made inroads into the District. This year the RCPJ conducted workshops of this approach in Teluk Intan, Ipoh and Tampin. The response from the teachers was encouraging. Plans are in the pipeline to spread it to the east coast states later in the year.

The Concentrated Language Encounter is a technique to put language learning and teaching into joyful experience. Students learn to participate in language. Meanings in language are put into focus. This marks the departure from the over-teaching of grammar without much attention to meaning. Now students are able to use the language to interact. That is what language is all about. This approach can be used for other languages as well.

From our discussion with the teachers, especially those from the primary schools, it is indeed sad that many of them are teaching more than three subjects. English could be one of them. This deprives the teachers to specialize in English teaching. And interest could be dampening in the light of this situation. There needs to be a re-look at the curriculum and the deployment of teachers according to their areas of specialization.
